New App Serves as “Trip Advisor” to Travellers with Disabilities

In the past, travelling from point A to B could be a tiresome enough job, let alone traveling abroad.

Today, wheelchair users and other travellers with disabilities have the chance to travel overseas, set sail on a cruise or take a drive across country to Grandmother's house. However, disabled vacationers surely recognise that there'll still be additional challenges while travelling.

Mobile travel apps can significantly improve a travel experience for disabled travellers by providing information about accessible transportation, accessible city attractions, museum access guides, etc.

The problem is that both iOS and Android do not allow simple and intuitive search of travel apps for cities and countries.

Pantou supplier AppsMapper prepared a table summarizing the status of travel apps for accessible tourism, for major European cities. The table contains the number of available apps and Average Quality Index, based on our quality criteria, namely:

  • relevance to covered city/country
  • relevance for accessible tourism
  • frequency of updates
  • number of downloads (Android only)
  • position on top apps lists (iOS only)
  • number of user's feedbacks
  • user's ratings

In the table below 1 is the lowest and 10 the highest quality.

This overview of the results demonstrates that dedicated accessible tourism apps are extremely rare and their quality varies widely. The weak and fragmented availability of accessibility apps creates obvious challenges for visitors with specific access requirements but also potential opportunities for apps developer.s

About AppsMapper  :

The AppsMapper service is a location-aware search tool of tourist-related mobile applications for cities, regions, countries and points of interest. It provides an overview of existing apps giving a first indication of where there is information provision - and whre there are gaps - for travellers.

One important focus of the AppsMapper service is the support of accessible tourism, and tourists with access needs. AppsMapper creates reports referring to mobile apps covering specific locations, points of interest and the languages that are supported.

Customised reports can be provided, on request, to Tourist Boards and other Destination Management Organizations (DMOs), enabling them to identify which locations require improvements in terms of mobile apps, supported languages and content coverage.
