Maison du Souvenir de Maillé
Maillé,
France
Service description:

August 25, 1944, when Paris was celebrating its release, 124 inhabitants of Maille, a small town in southern Touraine, were massacred by German soldiers.

In the years following the tragedy, the village has been completely rebuilt. This lack of ruins could have meant, unlike Oradour-sur-Glane, that this tragedy would fall completely into oblivion, even though it is the second largest massacre committed by the Nazis on French soil.

Opened in 2006, the “Maison du Souvenir” (“House of Memory”) seeks to make known and recognise this tragedy through more than 250 documents and a film of testimony. It tells the story of the village before, during and after the massacre. As an educational and citizen space, it also leads to reflection on the fate of civilian people in contemporary conflicts. It offers throughout the year exhibitions and events. On 25 August 2008, the massacre finally received national recognition with the opening ceremony of the “Maison du Souvenir” by the President of the Republic.

_____
